(…) By taking photos of unconventional and often strange-looking objects in urban or natural settings, Herceg completely ironizes established views about what is natural and what is not. He thus questions the subjectivising symbolic universe in which everyone considers something different to be unacceptable and abnormal. If it is disturbed, it is overwhelmed by the impossible measure of reality. Nevertheless, with a skewed photographic gaze, the artist searches for the universal principle in individual examples. In that sense, photography is seeing, and seeing is photography. – writes Željko Marciuš, NMMU museum consultant, in the foreword from the Natural / Unnatural exhibition catalogue. He is the author of the exhibition concept, and alongside the artist Stanko Herceg, author of the visual set-up. The sixteenth solo exhibition of this photographer and cinematographer, who started taking photographs at the age of eleven, will present, at the Josip Račić Gallery, twenty or so surreal colour photos that he captured between 2015 and 2022.
