Marina Baričević
May 15 – May 28, 2025
Concept by: Branko Franceschi
Exhibition curator: Lorena Šimić

“We remember Marina Baričević as an art historian, an influential art critic in both print and electronic media, and the author of numerous monographs as well as key surveys of Croatian ceramic art — which, without her, would not have come to life. (…) Her writing style reflected a purist approach, resulting in concise and communicatively clear texts aimed at achieving the fundamental professional goal of connecting the artist and their work with the public, while her monographs were grounded in the knowledge and study of facts. In freer forms, she allowed herself the liberty to evoke the working atmosphere and the character traits of artists through a more poetic experience of both their and her own reality. She made no distinction in her approach between celebrated artists and those who, despite their talent, did not reach the same level of fame. (…) Her passion for promoting ceramics and ceramic artists — in other words, a marginalized artistic discipline and artists often dismissed as incapable of achieving historical artistic excellence — had a deeper, personal motivation. In the end, it’s not crucial whether we interpret her support for the overlooked, bypassed, under-considered, obscure, or misunderstood through the lens of her personal history. What matters is that we adopt it as a professional obligation, a responsibility, and a reminder that we must not, consciously or unconsciously, align ourselves uncritically with the currently dominant narrative. (…) This exhibition, organized by ULUPUH — the association she chaired from 1983 to 1985 and which awarded her the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 — is based on works from her personal collection, which she donated to the Museum of Arts and Crafts. Modest in scale but rich in memory and emotion, the exhibition, as it should, honors her life and work — a professional career marked by integrity.”
– Branko Franceschi, adapted from the exhibition foreword
