Tonka Petrić (1929 – 1996) was a prominent Croatian painter known for her expressive drawings and rich, distinctive colors. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1957. In her works, she often dealt with figural compositions close to children's imagination, while her drawings and graphics are imbued with a grotesque and ironic approach. She is known for basing her works on introspective reflections and memories, creating a world of significance and symbolism.
With her distinctive style, Petrić created the figure of a woman applying make-up with accentuated facial and body features, using flat expressive drawing and rich colors. In the background is a neutral, cloudy color that highlights the mirageous representation of the woman. The work explores everyday life's intimate moments and rituals, depicting a woman in a moment of personal care and reflection. Petrić uses expressive brushstrokes and subtle color transitions to evoke a feeling of contemplation and a peaceful moment.
