At the ceremonial presentation of the Annual Awards for Achievements in 2022 and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Croatian Museum Association, held on 12 December at the Gorgona Hall of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, the Croatian Museum Association awarded the National Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Split the Award in the Category of Inter-Museum Collaboration for the year 2022 for the exhibition “Gloria: Croatian Artists Salute Kiki Smith”.
The works of the renowned American artist were first presented to the Croatian public in the curatorial concept of Branko Franceschi, the Director of NMMA and curator of the exhibition, in late 2021 and early 2022 at the National Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb https://nmmu.hr/2021/11/15/slava-hrvatske-umjetnice-pozdravljaju-kiki-smith/, together with works by Croatian artists Nevenka Arbanas, Biserka Baretić, Jagoda Buić, Vlasta Delimar, Ina Drutter, Marta Ehrlich, Ksenija Kantoci, Nives Kavurić Kurtović, Milena Lah, Sofija Naletilić Penavuša, Vesna Popržan, Slava Raškaj, Nasta Rojc, Edita Schubert - from the NMMA collection spanning a hundred years, which resonate and harmonise with the artistic oeuvre of Kiki Smith.
Following its premiere presentation in Zagreb, the exhibition “Gloria: Croatian Artists Salute Kiki Smith” was showcased at the Museum of Fine Arts in Split https://galum.hr/izlozbe/izlozba/1745/. The visual set-up, featuring works by Kiki Smith alongside pieces by Croatian artists from the Museum of Fine Arts collection, was curated by Jasminka Babić, the Director of the Museum of Fine Arts.
The bilingual catalogue in Croatian and English accompanies both exhibitions, allowing international audiences attracted by Kiki Smith’s charisma the opportunity to acquaint themselves with a century of prolific work by our artists.
