In the restored Pejačević Castle, from October 1 to 31, 2025, the National Museum of Modern Art, in collaboration with the Local History Museum Našice (https://www.zmn.hr/), presents the exhibition The Other Venice: Venetian Motifs in the Collection of the National Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb. This exhibition is part of the NMMU on Tour series – a cycle of phenomenological exhibitions through which, since 2022, the National Museum of Modern Art has been regularly showcasing its collection during the renovation of its headquarters, the Vranyczany–Dobrinović Palace.

The rich semantic fabric of Venice as the European capital of Symbolism, beyond its stereotypes, has proven to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists throughout history and into the present day. With its opulent history and exceptional beauty, this city of water offers itself as a rewarding theme of artistic expression. In the hands of skillful authors who can avoid the traps of overused meanings, the subject of Venice can be enriched with personal and distinctive interpretations. As exhibition curator and senior museum advisor Ivana Rončević Elezović, Phd, notes, it is surprising that the number of artworks with Venetian motifs in the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art is not large; yet, tellingly, they span the entire chronological range represented by the museum, across all its collections and diverse artistic media.

The exhibition features a selection of 18 works from the museum’s distinguished holdings, created from the 18th century to the present day. It includes paintings and medal art, works on paper, prints, photography, and video.

Artists: Filippo Balugani, Antonio Fabris, Franz Leo Ruben, Emanuel Vidović, Ivo Dulčić, Slavko Šohaj, Josip Botteri Dini, Nevenka Arbanas, Anabel Zanze, Goran Vranić, Kata Mijatović

The exhibition is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia. It is accompanied by a leaflet in Croatian with a text by  Ivana Rončević Elezović, Phd.
