The National Museum of Modern Art is staging an exhibition dedicated to Nikola Koydl, a contemporary Croatian painter and graphic artist who died in July last year at the age of 82. The exhibition author, art historian Biserka Rauter Plančić, brings together around eighty works in the exhibition set-up – drawings, mezzotints, oils and objects from the artist’s almost five-decades-long prolific creative oeuvre that she describes in the exhibition catalogue as follows – Created as a synergy between “classical” abstraction and new painting materials, this oeuvre is characterized primarily by image-constructing formal processes used by the artist to build his own thesaurus of artistic language and a unique poetic expression, undeniably grounded in the colourways and shapes of the Croatian landscape.
Along with the artist’s works from the holdings of the National Museum of Modern Art, the majority of works on display come from the artist’s bequest and other private collections. The public will be able to view the exhibition from 23 February to 11 April, and it will be accompanied by a richly illustrated bilingual catalogue in Croatian and English, with a foreword by Biserka Rauter Plančić. Due to the public health and safety situation, there is no official opening.
